It is a beautiful 3-story home that was upgraded years ago where they and their two sons lived for 36 years. George had his own extensive Class A studio in house where he wrote and produced hundreds of soundtracks, songs and recordings there. Corine entertained and produced in the full kitchen, dining room and bar that are full of dinner party pieces.

Many years ago, we did a private sale for the former home of Norma Talmadge, the silent movie actress, who was in films from 1910 to the advent of the talkies in 1929-1930. She was married to Joseph Schenck, an early executive MGM New York in 1917 during WWI. Soon after, moving to California, they lived in ‘The Cedars’ or the estate they used in the film ‘Easy Rider’ on Cedarhurst Drive. There were many items there belonging to the couple and we sold them for the owner at the time there some 18 yrs. ago. This home in Los Feliz contains pieces that we sold there. Those items are an 8’-9’ tall floor Eastlake mirror, and a 32” stone Corinthian column (owned by Norma Talmadge), a pr. of crystal floor ash trays, & a pr. of crystal lamps (owned by owners after her residency there)…all original from the Cedars house and left through several owners. For all of you that have been waiting for this sale, it will happen this Thursday and Friday October 25th and 26th from 8AM to 4PM plus. I would like to say out front that this is an unusual sale….unlike what we usually do. There will be some tables set out in the backyard and we might do some box lots to move things along. Except for the paintings, this sale is not the highest end, or the cleanest, but filled with things collected over 60 years. The dining set is a very nice 1940’s J.R. Van Sciver mahogany ensemble.
There are some nice rugs and lots of fun vintage linens, ephemera (maps, violin history, L.A. Philharmonic brochures, cooking pamphlets, tickets & Hollywood Bowl parking passes, old greeting cards from the 40’s, postcards, travel brochures-U.S. & Europe, photos, etc.), books, kitchen, bric-a-brac and jewelry. The whole house is vintage, with some antiques and mostly 40s!
The household was one filled with accomplished and famous violinists. First, Olga Mitana Balogh, wife and mother, who was in the L.A. Philharmonic for two to three decades along with her brother, Julian. They played with Stokowski, Eugene Ormandy, Alfred Wallenstein, Zubin Mehta, and so many other conductors. She taught violin to youth, and was in the Ted Bacon Golden Strings in the 1930s. Her son, Endre Balogh, a very accomplished well-travel violinist, began doing concerts at 4 years of age and has enthralled hundreds of thousands of concert goers for over 50 years. He is still playing occasional concerts and is also an amazing photographer. The household was headed up and led by husband and father, Ferenc Balogh, who was a chemist and on Philharmonic committees for years. He is still living and is in his 99th year. Mrs. Balogh passed away some 20 years ago before the earthquake in 1994.

The paintings are of great taste and are by artists from California, Massachusetts, Japan and elsewhere. Some names are Dana Bartlett, Cyril Ralph Baker, Berry Smith, Raiko Kanazava, Ray Raymond, Raoul Dufy and Marein. They are removed each night for security.

A Message from the Owner
Over the course of nineteen years, the collectors who lived here accumulated collections of visual art, books (notably a collection of poetry), tableware, and other objects.
Most of these works have a clear provenance: they were purchased at galleries, auctions, and from the artists themselves. Where feasible, we have printed out information about these works.
All prints have UV-reflective glass and matching black frames (except where already-framed when purchased). All water colors have high quality wooden frames; the Surendorf watercolors are framed in cherry wood.
The visual art collecting began with folk / outsider art.
